Can I bring my hunting dog? All of our mentors have their own dogs to hunt over. If you are interested in bringing your dog for our hunt, you must contact the coordinator before signing up. No one may hunt without a dog. Dogs must be under complete control at all times. Dogs running out of control or wildly flushing birds will not be tolerated. Do not allow your dog to interfere with other hunters. All dogs must be kept in a dog crate or vehicle when you are not hunting. You will be responsible for the behavior and actions of your dog, as well providing adequate food and water. Hunters are expected to keep all birds caught by their dog.
Where does the hunting take place? All of the upland hunting is done at Hastings Island Hunting Preserve in Rio Vista. This long standing hunt club is usually a member’s only opportunity and has consistently provided quality planted pheasant and chuckar hunting since 1968.
What do I bring?
-Hunting gear: valid 2020-21 California hunting license, upland game stamp, HIP stamp/validation, ear and eye protection, 2-4 boxes of steel (non-toxic) ammunition, gun, gun case, blaze orange vest and hat, sturdy pants and boots/closed toed shoes, hat, gloves, camera, windbreaker.
-Ammo: “While hunting, the Club does not allow the use of shot size smaller than 6 or larger than 5. You may hunt with Bismuth, Heavy Shot, and all types of steel shotshells – in essence, anything that does not contain lead. Most of our hunters will choose to shoot steel shot, mostly due to price. Because the ballistic properties of steel are very different from lead, we have changed the list of ammo that we allow to for hunting on Hastings Island to include: 12ga and 20ga, #5 and #6 shot size, with a powder load producing at least a minimum of 1,300fps at the muzzle. Magnum shells are prohibited. Lead based ammunition is still allowed for shooting trap.”-HIHP
I do not have the necessary hunting gear, what can I do? If you do not have the necessary hunting gear please contact Sarahbeth Gonsalves at 559-972-3441 or at firstname.lastname@example.org. California Waterfowl will lend gear for the weekend.
Do I need prior shotgun shooting experience? Yes, prior shotgun shooting experience is necessary. If you have no prior shooting experience please call Sarahbeth Gonsalves.
