YOUTH AND EDUCATION VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITIES
Get Outdoors with Kids!!
Volunteer for these exciting Marsh Madness events and become a part of the California Waterfowl team! To get started, fill out an application form.
Volunteers are needed to lead activities that help students understand about waterfowl, migration, habitats, food webs, agriculture, conservation and other topics, depending on the site and grade level. Or if bird-watching is your game, lead a small group of kids on a Walking Safari and share your love and knowledge of Central Valley waterfowl and other birds. All materials are provided and training is available. We also provide a wetland snack for everybody, and need help with preparing and serving.
Stone Lakes, Sacramento – October 28th
It’s a beautiful time of year to be out in the Marsh, and there is no place quite like Stone Lakes. Share your passion for wetland wildlife by volunteering on this special day when 40 or so students from Bowling Green Elementary experience the wetlands as they never have before. Be there when an awestruck student says, “I never knew all this was out here!!” The students will arrive by 9:00 and board the bus to leave at 1:00. In between they will explore the wetlands in a variety of ways in small groups of 10-12. Contact Kelly Rathburn to find out more or to volunteer, 916-648-1406.
Rancho Esquon, Chico – September 29, October 6, October 13, October 20
This working, private wildlife-friendly farm and the Community Youth Center are partnering with California Waterfowl to provide local students with an opportunity to get outside and discover the exciting world of wetlands. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn how benefits to people and wildlife are not mutually exclusive. Rancho Esquon is just 10 minutes south of Chico.
To volunteer, email Shane Romain, California Waterfowl’s Chico Area Education Liaison, or call 916-275-1014.
Cache Creek Nature Preserve, Woodland – November 17th and 19th
The Cache Creek Nature Preserve is a 130-acre property in the lower Cache Creek corridor. Habitats include riparian, upland, and wetland. Several productive wood duck boxes border the waterways, and over 80 different species of birds have been sighted at the preserve. Depending on the season, the weather and the time of day, one can sight muskrat, beaver, river otter, black-tailed deer, raccoon, jack rabbit, bobcat, hawks, owls, wetland birds, woodland birds, coyote and possibly oppossum. Lots of great things to share with the kids!! Contact Jennifer Tolman to volunteer, 916-648-1406 x102.
Community Outreach Academy, TBD – November 3rd and 5th
This special Marsh Madness experience will introduce 5th graders from the Community Outreach Academy in Natomas to local wetland and other habitats, along the Roseville/Sacramento corridor. Activities will include such things as conservation projects (dove cone nests, Junior Duck Stamp), bird watching and an identification game, adaptation investigations, and habitat exploration. Come show local students the nature just outside their front door! Contact Kelly Rathburn to volunteer, 916-648-1406.
