PARTNERING FOR PINTAILS
Our Goal
Ensure a healthy pintail population while sustaining hunter opportunity
The Situation
Pintails are among the most numerous ducks in California, yet hunters are subjected to aconstrictive pintail harvest model. California Waterfowl has taken up the challenge of addressing legitimate hunter concerns.
Low limits have not proven to benefit pintails. To the contrary, they have discouraged both pintail habitat support and hunter recruitment. The allure of pursuing pintails has captivated generations of waterfowlers, who own and sustain two-thirds of California’s remaining wetlands for the desire and ability to hunt waterfowl. Remaining public wetlands are also tied to hunter support.

Partnership Approach
Pintails are an international resource, and we must be willing to work together to implement a successful plan of action. California stakeholders are first and foremost on the list because our state is arguably the most important migrating and wintering area for pintails.
A number of networks are already in place, and this foundation of partners agrees: A sustainable pintail population and hunter opportunity depend upon sound biological data and adaptive management. This is California Waterfowl’s core philosophy.
Action Steps
California Waterfowl proposes to complete the following essential steps for accomplishing our goal:
• Band Pintails to Gather Vital Data
• Improve the Harvest Model
• Open the Process to More Stakeholders (including hunters!)
• Serve as Experts and Advocates
• Educate Decision-makers
• Provide Quality Pintail Habitat

The Time is Now
Your help is needed to support the work of the pintail partnership. The political climate, habitat changes, research needs, and hunter interest are converging to make this a critical year of action, and California Waterfowl has the expertise, networking, and vision to be successful.
