canada goose nest sighting

Canada geese typically nest within upland complexes of lush tall grasses as well as islands and nesting structures, however they have been known to nest in some pretty strange places.  There are anecdotal reports of geese nesting in hay lofts in barns, old abandoned cars, etc.  They are known to utilize abandoned eagles’ nests, nest on rocky cliffs and in trees.  While on a site visit at the O’Brien Ranch in Yuba County a CWA biologist was able to snap these pictures of Canada geese nesting in a tree near a brood pond.  The manager mentioned that it was the first time he had seen the pair use the tree.  Great efforts have been made on the ranch to improve nesting habitat, but this was not part of the plan.
