GOOSE PROGRAM
Managing Rural and Urban Populations
Goals:
• Educate the public about over-population
in geese and stimulate public respect for goose biology and behavior.
• Evaluate options for addressing critical goose
issues.
• Work with public land managers and other
entities to manage for breeding as well as wintering habitats.
• Utilize government affairs to
assist with waterfowl and wetlands activities.
Project Spotlight: CWA Helps Fund Goose Feeding Study in Oregon

Through the Dennis Raveling scholarship program CWA contributed $1,000 to an Oregon State University PhD student studying feeding habits and needs of Canada and Cackling geese in Oregon. During the past 30 years the number of Canada and Cackling geese wintering in the Willamette Valley of Oregon has increased from 20,000 to 250,000 birds. This has resulted in a large increase in the amount of depredation of grass seed crops on private lands. The study hopes to shed light on possible management strategies to alleviate crop depredation by large flocks of geese in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.
About CWA's Goose Program
The Concern
Currently focused on Canada geese,
this CWA program seeks an increase to rural populations. Helping
to band and track geese as well as enhance their habitats, we also
provide plans for building nest platforms, which is largely a volunteer-based
effort. In city parks and golf courses, where geese can become a
nuisance, CWA biologists provide management suggestions.
CWA's Approach
CWA’s Goose Program focuses
on enhancing breeding conditions in rural areas, educating the public
about goose issues, and monitoring. This program uses volunteers
to establish resident breeding populations of Canada geese throughout
northern California. Methods involve placement of nesting structures
and redistribution of nuisance geese to areas with suitable habitats
and recreational opportunities.
