Areas Set Aside for Junior Hunters

Los Banos Wildlife Area: There are ten 2-person blinds in the Mud Slough junior area. In addition, Zone 6 includes three tank blinds reserved every shoot day for junior hunters and their escorts. Only one junior and one adult may hunt from a blind.

Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge: There are 2 blinds reserved for parties with juniors. A party must consist of a maximum of 2 junior hunters and no more than one adult hunter.

Grizzly Island: The West Family Unit is reserved for junior hunters only. There are four two-person blinds. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult, and if the adult is hunting, he or she must possess either a type A area or type B area season pass. These are managed on a first-come first-served basis.

Colusa National Wildlife Refuge: Pond P2 is reserved for 3 parties, of which 2 parties must consist of at least one disabled hunter, and the other party must consist of at least one junior hunter.

Howard Slough Unit: In the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area, special junior waterfowl hunts will be conducted on Wednesdays and Saturdays of the waterfowl season in zone 7 of the Howard Slough Unit starting on the first Saturday after December 15th. These hunts begin at legal shooting time and close at 12:00 noon and juniors must be accompanied by no more than one adult.

Special Youth Hunts for Junior Hunters.

Sacramento & Delevan National Wildlife Refuges: The Sacramento refuge complex hosts a hunt at the Sacramento refuge in early December and at the Delevan refuge in mid-December. To be considered, juniors must apply by postcard during November to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, 752 County Road 99W, Willows, CA, 95988 . Those not drawn can show up for a lottery draw for remaining openings on a first-come, first-served basis. Adult chaperones are not permitted to hunt during these special hunts. Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge: On January 27, 2007 all blinds at Stone Lakes will be reserved for juniors.

Grizzly Island Wildlife Area: The Department of Fish and Game holds two special junior duck hunts at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area in December. For these hunts, the spaced blinds on Pond 11 and Crescent Unit at Grizzly Island are available only for junior hunt participants. Regulations and Requirements

To participate in special hunts during the season, youths must have completed a hunter education course, have a valid California junior hunting license, and be accompanied byan adult at least 18 years of age. The adult may supervise a maximum of two junior hunters, and must not be hunting.

Did you figure it out?

1.. Even if you think your gun is unloaded, never point the muzzle where youwould not want to shoot. Remember always - MUZZLE CONTROL!

2. Don't ever swing your shotgun toward another person.

3. Only put your finger on the trigger when you are ready to shoot!

4. Keep the muzzle of your gun clear. A clogged gun can be very dangerous!

5. Alway carefully load your gun, making sure you put the shell in correctly.
