SUMMER Public Relations INTERNSHIP
Paid Summer Internship (June – October 2008) 
 
Position Title: Public Relations Intern

Objective:  Assist in the development and implementation of effective communications strategies that will help the association reach a broader audience through the media.  The Public Relations Intern will work closely with California Waterfowl’s Public Information Officer to create organization strategies, press releases, position statements and media outreach calendars.  Additionally, the chosen intern will compile facts and survey information for easy use and research targeted PR opportunities on the web.

Duties:

  • P.R. outreach:  Work alongside staff to develop and coordinate calendar specific press releases and program promotions.
  • Research:  Explore and catalog outreach opportunities online and through a media database.  
  • Create:  Assist in the creation of dynamic new outreach efforts including videos, events, and a statewide survey and public relations campaign. 
  • Event Planning:  Work with staff to develop specific event plans, materials and scheduling of select outreach events.  This will include development of theme, atmosphere, speaker agendas and bios to create a focused event.
  • Writing:  Develop content for the website and general staff use, such as position statements, fact sheets, talking points and more. 
  • Develop Organization Strategies:  Provide to the Public Information Officer by organizing content, correspondence, and files.
  • General Office Assistance:  Assist staff with basic office tasks including copying, filing, circulating materials, and more.
  • Reporting:  Provide periodic written reports of progress and contacts.

Qualifications: Applicants require basic public relations communications knowledge. Strong organizational skills a must, and experience working in the field of communications preferred.  General knowledge of North American waterfowl, waterfowl hunting, wetland habitats, and shooting is a plus, but not required. Pursuit of a degree in Public Relations, Communications, or Advertising or related field is preferred. The intern must be energetic, organized, reliable, and self-motivated. Screening processes include a DMV records check and fingerprinting / background check.

Work Site, Term, and Compensation: Work site is the main office in Sacramento.  The position will be part time, averaging 10 hours per week, from June 2008 through October 2008.  Exact starting and ending dates are flexible based on applicant’s college schedule. This position is currently unfunded, however, college credits may be available depending upon your college’s requirements.
