YOUTH CAMPS PROGRAM ASSISTANT
Paid Summer Internship (May – September 2008)
Two Youth Camp Program Internships are available with the California Waterfowl Association in 2008. The selected interns will receive extensive hands-on work experience to complement classroom education and prepare for future employment in youth education and recreation or event planning. Interns will learn about waterfowl, waterfowling as well as wetlands, wildlife and conservation. The goal is to help youths develop outdoor recreational skills and a conservation mindset while attending single and multiple day camps throughout California.
Position Title: Youth Camps Program Assistant
Objective: To hold CWA youth camps at host sites throughout California to teach about waterfowl, waterfowling, wetlands, wildlife, and conservation. The camps program assistant will work closely with CWA’s camp program coordinator to promote and hold events around the state with a total of 500 youths attending during 2008.
Duties:
- Program development: Work alongside CWA staff to develop camp curriculum and program manual.
- Camp promotions: Write press releases, talk to local newspapers and local volunteers to ensure full attendance at all events.
- Camp planning: Develop specific camp plans, materials and scheduling of volunteer presenters. This will include development of lesson plans and educational material that will be presented by yourself and/or volunteer instructors.
- Events: Attend events, perform youth instruction, and work in cooperation with youth program volunteers and staff at camps throughout California from Los Angeles to Redding.
- Write announcements and articles about the program as needed.
- Provide periodic written reports of progress and contacts.
Qualifications: Applicants require basic wildlife/conservation biology knowledge. Public speaking skills a must, and experience working with youths 8-15 years of age preferred. General knowledge of North American waterfowl, waterfowl hunting, wetland habitats, and shooting a plus, but not required. Pursuit of a teaching credential in any discipline, recreation programs or related field is preferred. The assistant must be energetic, organized, reliable, and self-motivated. Screening processes include a DMV records check and fingerprinting/background check.
Work Site, Term, and Compensation: Work site is variable with some office work in Sacramento; the assistant must be able to travel to camp sites in his/her vicinity and work during weekend camps. Positions will be part time, averaging 40 hours per week, from May 2008 through September 2008. Exact starting and ending dates are flexible based on applicant’s college schedule. Compensation is $10.00 per hour plus applicable mileage reimbursement (or use of CWA vehicle as appropriate).
